Ascend is a typeface inspired by my evolutionary understanding of afterlife. Since losing my dad, I have noticed signs surrounding my life that connect us. Our communication is complex. It is not a typical verbal or visual connection. It’s enigmatic. I wanted to highlight my past and present experience of this phenomenon through my typeface. This concept ties strongly to my spiritual journey and understanding of a life past death. I named the font Ascend because it symbolizes my developing understanding of loss and it ties in aspects of a life beyond.
The sharp external lines of the type symbolize my external expression of grief that comes from subconsciously learned behavior when telling my dad’s story. The round internal lines symbolize my ambiguous, abstract understanding of his death. This pairing highlights the complicated relationship with my emotions. I used a thin stroke to represent the delicate line that separates us from lost loved ones. The fragmented text connects to my fragmented memory of him. I wanted this type to personify a universal understanding of grief while also illustrating the transparent and clear connection I have with my dad.
I dedicate this project to my past self and her use of the negative aspects of life to develop a positive present and future.
